Create one group for the trip, log each expense in the currency you paid in, split by item when orders differ, and settle once at the end in a single currency. Pick an app with no daily expense cap so you can log as you go.
Before you leave
- Make one group for the trip and add everyone, including people who will not install anything.
- Pick a group currency for the final settlement, usually the one most of you earn in.
- Agree what is shared. Accommodation and transport are usually equal; meals and activities often are not.
During the trip
Log it when it happens
Add the expense in the currency you paid in. Waiting until the end means forgetting who paid for what. This is where a daily limit gets in the way (Splitwise's free plan allows 3 expenses a day), so choose an app without one. Slyce does not cap expenses per day.
Scan the bigger bills and let friends claim
Group dinners are the biggest arguments. Scan the receipt, share a claim link and let each person pick their items instead of dividing evenly.
Handle currencies
Do not convert by hand. Slyce supports 140+ currencies, and the group settles in its group currency with one plan, so you are not reconciling euros, baht and dollars separately.
At the end
Open the group balance. With simplified settlements the group makes as few payments as possible: if Ana owes Ben and Ben owes Chloe, Ana can pay Chloe directly. Each person sees who to pay and how much, and Slyce Pay hands off to their chosen payment method.
| Ana pays Chloe | $48.00 |
| Ben pays Chloe | $31.50 |
| You pay Chloe | $20.25 |
Friends who are not in the app
Someone always refuses to install another app. In Slyce they can join through a link, see their share and be settled without an account.
A short checklist
- One group per trip, group currency chosen up front.
- Log expenses the same day.
- Scan group meals and let friends claim.
- Settle once, at the end.
Frequently asked questions
How do you split expenses in different currencies?
Record each expense in the currency it was paid in and settle the group in one currency at the end. Slyce does the conversion and produces a single settlement plan.
Do all my friends need the app?
No. They can join by link and see their share without installing or signing up.
